The Resilient Entrepreneur

Resilience can be defined as being able to adapt and “live to tell it” in the face of life affecting adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant stress.  Negative experiences, including but not limited to family and relationship problems, serious health problems, financial challenges or workplace issues can affect your ability to achieve a state of resilience.

“Stay on your assignment no matter what life looks like.”

Wow!  Just reading that definition makes me a little anxious!  Whew!!

As a business owner we sometimes experience any combination of the above.  It’s a wonderful thing being your own boss, working for yourself, not having to “clock-in”, proudly displaying your logo on your monogrammed company shirts and caps, and being able to call it all your own. All that is nice! But it comes with hard work, determination, and oftentimes missing the mark.  Ouch!

However difficult to achieve, resilience is a great thing!  Without it, where would most successful entrepreneurs be?

During my years of entrepreneurial experiences, I’ve had successes and failures.  I must admit the failures have been painful.  But with each so-called “failure”, I’ve grown stronger and wiser.  As the german philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote, “what doesn’t kill me will make me stronger”.

So with that said, yes, you will experience discomfort sometimes even leading to tears.  But there are ways to ease the pain and enjoy the other side of the mountain.

Life has thrown me some curveballs (and boy do I NOT like baseball).  However, I’m still here, still striving!!!

Here’s some ways I tackle those mind binding spirits and increase my emotional resilience while working my real estate business:

  • Try to stay optimistic. Have FAITH!!  Recognize it for what it is, no denials, but believe you can overcome and achieve even more. There are going to be a lot of “no’s”. But beyond the no’s there will be greater Yes’s. Celebrate your achievements and become your best cheerleader!
  • Try to minimize the fear.  Face up to it!  You’re going to be scared and not know everything in the beginning.  It’s ok.  But don’t let it hold you back. Maintain that “Can Do” attitude and push through it with your network of real estate SMEs (subject matter experts).
  • Establish a network of resilient role models.  Make sure to connect to those you can receive from and don’t forget to pay it back!  You’d be surprised what happens when you take your mind off of you and reach out to help others.
  • Exercise, take a walk, clear your mind.  You’ll be better able to handle the stress in a more relaxed frame of mind
  • Always continue to learn. Even though you may be a seasoned real estate professional, there’s always new ideas, technique’s, products, neighborhoods to explore and areas to focus on.  As my good friend and fabulous bounce back coach says, become an information junkie. But be careful to not let it distract you.
  • Get down on those knees and pray! Maintain your strong spiritual beliefs whatever they may be. Resilience is the best affirmation for overcoming adversity

So maintain your resilience.  In the end it will all pay off.  I have Faith that it will!
